The Volcano Cycle Trail in the Vogelsberg Mountains

Stretching for 94 km, the Volcano Cycle Trail winds along the old Oberwaldbahn railway line, through the woods and meadows of Central Europe’s largest extinct shield volcano. The view of nature, small villages and little towns is probably the same as the one etched in the memory of railway passengers up to the mid-seventies. Since 2007, the route has been signposted all the way up to the Fulda Cycle Trail at Schlitz. The total length of the route from Altenstadt in Wetterau (where it joins the Limes Trail) to Schlitz is 94 km. Cyclists can easily reach the cathedral town of Fulda, 25 km on from Schlitz, via the Fulda Cycle Trail "R1".

The opening of the railway line, which linked the remote Vogelsberg to the prosperous Rhine-Main region, brought an economic upswing to the inaccessible, rural region in the early part of the 20th century. These days, as the Volcano Cycle Trail, the former railway line has become a brand for pleasure cycling in the low mountains. The Route, with its fine surface, substantial width and maximum gradient of only 3% offers optimum conditions for pleasure cyclists, families with kids and occasional cyclists. Cycling, even mountain biking, becomes an incredibly enjoyable experience on the Volcano Cycle Trail.

The entire Trail is suitable for inline skaters, who will find the Volcano Route a real challenge.
